Ode to the musical finale!
Not only are they an appropriate and satisfying ending to the story, but they also amp up the emotional impact of what could have been a less-than-fantasmic denouement. Here are some of my favorites:
Dirty Dancing ~ Time of My Life
Sister Act 2 ~ Joyful Joyful
Grease ~ The One That I Want/We Go Together
Shrek ~ I'm a Believer
Annie ~ I Don't Need Anything But You
Mary Poppins ~ Let's Go Fly a Kite
Footloose ~ Footloose
Not a complete list, but I could seriously sit here and do this all day. I'd love to see what some of your favorites are. Please share!

I love the Joyful Joyful in Sister Act 2! That is one of my favorite pieces of music anyway.
ReplyDeleteRequiem in Amadeus is another favorite of mine and the whole damn soundtrack to The Red Violin is phenomenal. The violin is its own character and the soundtrack is its dialogue. And Josh Bell? Yum.
The music at the end of Dangerous Liasons perfectly suits the final images.
I like the series of chords at the end of Phantom of the Opera, too. It goes through minor and an atonal one somewhere in the middle and ascends to the final open major chord that sounds so full and finally complete.
And, of course, the end of Animal House.
Ooh, good stuff, Laurel! Amadeus was one of my faves as a kid, being a violinist and all... but how did I never see The Red Violin? Must see it now. Thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, yes. You MUST see it NOW. Tragically, Josh Bell merely plays the soundtrack and as far as I know does not make an appearance. But it is amazing.
ReplyDeleteI love the happy music at the end of one of my favorite movies...Romancing the Stone.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I recently found out the song "Time of My Life" was sung by Patrick Swayzie. Such a talented man and his death is a great loss.
Christi Corbett
That's another good one, Christi, thanks! And yes, Patrick Swayze was an awesome entertainer.
ReplyDeleteThose are some great ones. I also love the closing credits song for the anime Witch Hunter Robin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_STGcmn3YE
ReplyDeleteThe closing song for Wall-e is sweet.
David Bowie's reprise of Dance, Magic, Dance and Underground for Labyrinth is a favorite, along with Bliss 66's Not Quite Paradise for Titan A.E. (one of the most underrated movies of the past few years, in my opinion--it was everything that Heavy Metal 2000 should have been). Both Narnia movies so far have had wonderful music over the credits, with Imogen Heap's Can't Take It In on the first film, and Regina Spektor's The Call for the second.
ReplyDeleteThose are just a few, but I think they all accent the feel of the films.
