I have a "to read" pile that grows (literally) by the day because of finding books on other blogs I follow and websites I happen to browse. If you are friends with me on GoodReads, you know exactly what I'm talking about. The updates are endless. And some of those additions to my reading pile have come from seeing friends' updates on the books they're reading or going to read.
This is marketing through word of mouth at its best. So I thought I'd show you some of the book covers that recently got my attention and ended up in my reading pile. For fun, and to share the love. Maybe you'll be reading one of these soon because you saw it here.
I just added that last one today. Something about the snow... eerie.
Have you been snagged by a book cover lately?
~Lydia

Ooh, that snow one got me all curious what it's about. And reminds me to get a new winter coat.
ReplyDeleteQuite a few of those are actually on my tbr pile too. And quite a few of those because of the cover, and then the blurb.
ReplyDeleteHer and me and you and Whither look beautiful <3
Most of those I'm not interested in, but I'm still planning to get to Firelight. I might take a peak at Wither, too.
ReplyDeleteSo, I know you aren't supposed to judge a book by it's cover - but a great cover and intriguing title will definitely make me take a glance at the synopsis. If that looks interesting, you can bet it will make my to-read pile. It's interesting that all the latest 'big hits' also have very eye catching covers.
ReplyDeleteThe stuff that never happened really grabbed my attention. I hadn't seen that cover before. Pretty brilliant!
ReplyDeleteOkay, WITHER has been on my wish list for a while. Definitely a neat cover. And being as it's the first in a three part series by a debut author, I definitely want to check it out.
ReplyDeleteFIRELIGHT is on my "to read next" list - I almost started reading it tonight, but decided on THE SKY IS EVERYWHERE instead. (Though FIRELIGHT's cover isn't what made me want to read it, now that I think about it. It's actually everything I've read about it on the internet!)
Also want to read Losing Faith, and I love THE ESPRESSOLOGIST cover, I totally would have grabbed that one based on the how it looks if I'd seen it at a bookstore (she says, adding it to her Borders wish list)!
Books I recently grabbed due to a cover or blurb? BEFORE I FALL (and knowing you also read it, are you going to jump at the chance to read DELIRIUM as soon as it comes out?), IMPOSSIBLE, and THIRTEEN REASONS WHY.
Whu, why didn't I capitalize one book? LOSING FAITH. There. That's better.
ReplyDeleteI love the covers for The Stuff That Never Happened and Losing Faith, they're gooorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI was recently caught by Museum of Thieves: The Keepers, by Lian Tanner. The cover was fantastic, so I picked it up--the book is turning out to live up to its promise! You can see it here: http://liantanner.com.au/
(I have no connection at all, promise!)
@Jessica,
ReplyDeleteOf course YOU would love anything related to coffee!
BEFORE I FALL was one I saw at the bookstore and got snagged by the cover, and it ended up being one of my fave reads this year. As for DELIRIUM, I'm definitely interested because I think Lauren Oliver is an outstanding author, but the cover didn't really wow me--the blurb did. I'd forgotten to officially add it to my reading pile, though, so I'm glad you mentioned it!
@Terry and Amie,
The cover for THE STUFF THAT NEVER HAPPENED really does have a simple beauty and wonder to it. And I think all that blue is what got my attention in the first place. I'm a sucker for anything blue. ;)
Also, Amie, thanks for linking to those covers. Awesome!
Almost forgot...
ReplyDelete@mc,
That white stuff will be here soon. As someone who has worked in dept store retail for nine years, please trust me--get your coat now before it snows! I see people wait until the last minute every stinkin' year, and then they throw a stupid fit when there's a blizzard and our stock of coats is next to nil... in early December when winter hasn't even officially started yet.
October is the best time to shop if you're looking for the best selection of winter items. By November and December, you're lucky to find your style, your color, your size in anything.
Love the WITHER cover.
ReplyDeleteRecently, the cover to Daryl Gregory's PANDEMONIUM caught my attention.
Also, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE.
Lydia,
ReplyDeleteI agree, the cover to DELIRIUM isn't very grabbing. And you're right, that's why I liked the cover to that one so much;)
Unfortunately, most military scifi novels have a chick with big breasts and an even bigger gun on the cover, so I don't even bother looking at them. I go right to the inside flap so see how much shooting I'm going to read.
ReplyDeleteThe stark simplicity of the cover for Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke drew me in immediately. Of course, that's the kind of book I probably would've picked up anyway, but it was the cover that really cinched it for me.
ReplyDeleteSame with The Court of the Air by Stephen Hunt. I love a good steampunk story, but the Victorian art and design of the paperback is what caught my attention.
Sadly that last one looks like my town from November to May. lol.
ReplyDeleteI'm a title, blurb girl. Covers are cutesy, but it has to be really fab to pull me in.
One of my favorite parts about working at a book store is unpacking the shipment each week for two major reasons -
ReplyDelete1) I get to hide in the back room and listen to my MP3 player.
2) I get to see all the new books before they hit the sales floor. :D
(That way if there is one I want to read I snag a copy right away.)
The last book to snag me with its cover was 'Eon.' It was a great read, even though I was a bit annoyed by the cliffhanger ending. I don't care that there is a sequel. The author is Australian and she JUST got the MS for it to her publisher at the end of August. It will be years before it's released in the U.S. :'(
