The Murmurings by Carly Anne West

Why I added it:
Death, suicide, psychosis... It's like the author wrote it just for me! I'm having palpitations just thinking about how far away March is. *twitch* Need it. *twitchety twitch* Need it now.

The city of Kersh is a safe haven, but the price of safety is high. Everyone has a genetic Alternate—a twin raised by another family—and citizens must prove their worth by eliminating their Alts before their twentieth birthday. Survival means advanced schooling, a good job, marriage—life.
Fifteen-year-old West Grayer has trained as a fighter, preparing for the day when her assignment arrives and she will have one month to hunt down and kill her Alt. But then a tragic misstep shakes West’s confidence. Stricken with grief and guilt, she’s no longer certain that she’s the best version of herself, the version worthy of a future. If she is to have any chance of winning, she must stop running not only from her Alt, but also from love . . . though both have the power to destroy her.

Why I added it:
I'm actually not too keen on "future Earth gone awry" stories right now, but the concept here grabbed me by the nostrils and forced me to look it in the eye.
Hello, twins!
And not only that, genetic alternate parallel life twins!
And not only that, genetic alternate parallel life twins that you must DESTROY OR BE DESTROYED!
And not only that, there's a romance... thread in here... somewhere...?
Okay, so the blurb didn't quite sell me on the romantic element--more like just tossed it in there at the last minute for some extra spice--but if they think it's strong enough to even be mentioned in the blurb then it has swoon potential. Come February, we'll know for sure.

The cure for a broken heart? Go vintage and live like it’s 1962!
Mallory’s boyfriend, Jeremy, isn’t just cheating on her. He’s cheating with an online girlfriend. So Mallory decides to swear off boys and modern technology. Inspired by a list of goals her grandmother made in 1962, Mallory decides to “go vintage” and return to a simpler time. She sets out to complete grandma’s list: run for pep club secretary, host a dinner party, sew a homecoming dress, find a steady, do something dangerous.
The list proves to be trickier than it looks. Obviously finding a steady is out . . . no matter how intriguing she finds Oliver (er, Jeremy's cousin). But with the help of her sister, Mallory will finish the list and find peace. Somehow.

Why I added it:
I'm slightly biased on this one because Lindsey was a former blog-mate with me at the YA Contemps and I just love love love her. But! This book has all the makings of an amazing rom-com, which is hard to find in YA these days. Romantic comedies tend to be either funny OR romantic, rarely both. I'm sure Lindsey hits a grand slam with this one--and if nothing else, at least I can enjoy the vintage-y goodness.

The Reece Malcolm List by Amy Spalding
February 12, 2013 from Entangled Teen
Things I know about Reece Malcolm:
1. She graduated from New York University.
2. She lives in or near Los Angeles.
3. Since her first novel was released, she’s been on the New York Times bestseller list every week.
4. She likes strong coffee and bourbon.
5. She’s my mother.
Devan knows very little about Reece Malcolm, until the day her father dies and she’s shipped off to live with the mother she’s never met. All she has is a list of notebook entries that doesn’t add up to much. L.A. offers a whole new world to Devan—a performing arts school allows her to pursue her passion for show choir and musicals, a new circle of friends helps to draw her out of her shell, and an intriguing boy opens up possibilities for her first love.
But then the Reece Malcolm list gets a surprising new entry. Now that Devan is so close to having it all, can she handle the possibility of losing everything?

Why I added it:
This one is hard to explain. Something about the idea behind this story just speaks to me. Maybe it's because I didn't expect the list in question to be about the girl's mother--and I adore mother/daughter stories. Maybe it's because she pursues performing arts (something I did in high school). Maybe it's because of the thrill of a first love... I don't know. But I'm definitely picking this one up in February.

The Reece Malcolm List is definitely on my wish list. I also can't wait to get my hands on Every Day by David Levithan. I read a sample of it, and I almost died. That's how awesome it is.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to reading What's Left of Me by Kat Zhang as well because it has been compared to Never Let Me Go, which is one of my favorite books.
Happy reading. Congratulations on Twin Sense by the way. :D
Thanks, Tracey! Going to check out those books now...
DeleteWhat an awesome list! I admit that the Alt book piqued my interest--what an intriguing concept. Thanks, Lydia.
DeleteI'm reading a great one by Jodi Picoult (co-written with her daughter) called Between the Lines. It's a fairy tale with a twist and there's plenty of romance. I'm loving it so far.
ReplyDeleteOoh yes, I've already added that one. Good to know you're enjoying it!
