I love fairy tale retellings. They seem to be gaining popularity recently, but I know they're nothing new. So there are plenty out there. My problem, however, is that most of the ones I see are either modern-day retellings or fantasy-style retellings. Sci-fi retellings seem to be more rare.
And sci-fi retellings are what I crave. But not just any sci-fi retellings, I want GOOD ones. A good retelling sticks pretty closely to the original tale (I like to be able to recognize that it is, in fact, a retelling, not a wholly new story with coincidental similarities), but also wows me with the unique twists.

So. Any recs? Looking for both books and movies, preferably in the MG/YA arena like those mentioned above.
Please and thanks,

Edit: For the purposes of this post "fairy tale" means "any well-known, classic story." I know Treasure Island is not a fairy tale. Neither is Alice In Wonderland, for example, but I'd LOVE to see a sci-fi retelling of that.

Sadly I have no recos, but I love them too. Cinder is WAITING for me on my bookshelf, I'm so excited to read it!
ReplyDeleteI have no recommendations, either, but would LOVE to see more Sci-Fi re-tellings. Treasure Planet is one of my favorite movies ever -- and I quite liked CINDER. It'd definitely be nice to read more.
ReplyDeleteI just finished reading a post by Mary Kole on the subject (from an agent point-of-view). I haven't read any of the type yet, but also just saw a cover reveal on an MG retelling of Rumpelstiltskin called, appropriately, Rump.

That sounds good just from the title!
DeleteI don't have any suggestions, but I'll be watching this thread.
ReplyDeleteCinder had me on a sci-fi fairy tale kick as well, but I found nothing. I'm sure more will come out in the next few years.
ReplyDeleteI guess it's either wait or write it ourselves
:D
Nothing?! Hmm...
ReplyDeleteI realize I'm a few months late on this, but I adored "A Long Long Sleep" by Anna Sheehan. It's a sci-fi retelling of Sleeping Beauty, set after she wakes up and has to deal with the repercussions of having been in cryo for sixty years. Here's the description from Amazon:
ReplyDelete"Rosalinda Fitzroy has been asleep for sixty-two years when she is woken by a kiss.
Locked away in the chemically induced slumber of a stasis tube in a forgotten sub-basement, sixteen-year-old Rose slept straight through the Dark Times that killed millions and utterly changed the world she knew. Now her parents and her first love are long dead, and Rose -- hailed upon her awakening as the long-lost heir to an interplanetary empire -- is thrust alone into a future in which she is viewed as either a freak or a threat.
Desperate to put the past behind her and adapt to her new world, Rose finds herself drawn to the boy who kissed her awake, hoping that he can help her to start fresh. But when a deadly danger jeopardizes her fragile new existance, Rose must face the ghosts of her past with open eyes -- or be left without any future at all."
